Sheet 01 — General arrangement

Mechanical design engineer in Montreal.

I take hardware from concept to production: horticultural LED lighting, lab and surgical instruments, railway optical sensors. Design for manufacturing, simulation, and a lot of prototyping.

Capabilities Details A — C

CAD & simulation

SolidWorks — FEA, Flow Simulation and rendering — plus Fusion 360. Thermal and structural analysis used to drive real design decisions, not to decorate them.

Prototyping & manufacturing

FDM and MSLA 3D printing, simple PCB design in KiCad, CNC machining, electronics and soldering. Design for manufacturing and assembly, lean manufacturing, Six Sigma.

Programming

Python, Git, Java, C and Arduino, MATLAB, and generative AI for research, analysis and automation. Built a Plotly tool that simulated thousands of LED system designs to find optimal design spaces.

Sollum Technologies

Mechanical Design Engineer — LED lighting systems. Product and production tooling design, leading multidisciplinary teams, suppliers and contract manufacturers through production readiness.

Current (GE Lighting)

Mechanical Designer — primary designer on a second generation vertical farming LED system. 30% lower cost of manufacture with better efficiency, 10% fewer fixtures per farm.

Zimmer Biomet

Mechanical Designer — durability and impact test jigs for spinal surgical tooling, plus documentation supporting an FDA 510(k) submission.

SCIREQ

Mechanical Designer — led a modular expansion of a respiratory research system from requirements through prototypes to production, in plastics, metals and elastomers.

Wayside Inspection Devices

Intern — railway laser-optical sensors. Structural FEA redesign of a printed part for a 50% strength increase; thermal FEA for a cast heatsink and a heated optical window.

SCALE 1:2

Custom flight sim joystick

Designed from the ground up: hall-effect pitch and roll, a throttle, a rotary encoder panel, and Arduino Micro logic. The goal was a joystick anyone with a 3D printer and some soldering know-how could build inexpensively.

Outside work

Total solar eclipse: the black lunar disc ringed by the Sun's white corona, with pink prominences on the limb.
Total solar eclipse — corona and prominences, 8 April 2024

Astrophotography

Nebulae, galaxies, planets and eclipses since 2017, with image stacking and processing. Most of the mounts and adapters I use are ones I designed and printed.

3D printing

FDM and resin — repairs, astro accessories, and parts for fun.

Woodworking

Furniture building, of the kind that needs clamps you don't own yet.

Coffee & espresso

An excuse to obsess over grind size and pressure profiles.

Watches

A small collection, digital and mechanical.

Building computers

Self-taught; three high-end desktop builds so far.
